Winterset Hollow by Jonathan E. Durham

“I do wish you peace in the fields beyond…because I am certain you will not find it here.”

There’s a must-read book coming out on September 7th! If you’re a fan of dark stories containing magical realism, or are excited about the idea of being able to see a magic world clash with yours, keep reading.

This book is recommended for readers who like stories with deep, dark secrets; antagonists that will make you seethe; tearjerkers; characters fighting for survival like in The Hunger Games; the blending of fantasy and reality like in the The Magicians, Once Upon a Time, Harry Potter, and Alice in Wonderland; bibliophiles and friendships at the center; teamwork; edge-of-your-seat thrillers and mysteries; a little gore and horror; adventure; childhood nostalgia; and characters so complex they blur your concept of right and wrong.

Who isn’t looking for something new these days, something to shake up our current, depressing reality. Many of us are yearning for a magic clash between our dreams and this world. We’re here, ready to claim an adventure. And let’s face it, our world could use a little magic, couldn’t it. Winterset Hollow is your invitation to such a clash and a claim, but will you take it?

In this book three friends chase the opportunity to go on a trip to visit the home of their favorite author. When they get there, they learn that their favorite childhood book is based on a real place and living, breathing characters! As you go page by page, you slowly unravel that the author and the story that ties the friends together isn’t as innocent and lovable as they thought. They’re forced to re-evaluate the devotion they’d given the author and story for so long as they fight for their very lives.

Official synopsis

“Everyone has wanted their favorite book to be real, if only for a moment. Everyone has wished to meet their favorite characters, if only for a day. But be careful in that wish, for even a history laid in ink can be repaid in flesh and blood, and reality is far deadlier than fiction … especially on Addington Isle.

Winterset Hollow follows a group of friends to the place that inspired their favorite book—a timeless tale about a tribe of animals preparing for their yearly end-of-summer festival. But after a series of shocking discoveries, they find that much of what the world believes to be fiction is actually fact, and that the truth behind their beloved story is darker and more dangerous than they ever imagined. It’s Barley Day… and you’re invited to the hunt.”

The premise of this sounds a lot like Lev Grossman’s The Magicians, where they go to a Narnia-like world and find out it’s not as charming and innocent as in the books they read as kids.

I’d say so, plus some Hunger Games thrown in there (hehe) because there’s actually some intense human hunting that goes on. And unlike The Magicians (which I love!) the characters go to a secluded island in our world versus going to another world. 🙂
